What's cooking in the IJ's Kitchen
The baking class for ex-IJ girls, Home Econs Revisited, was a highly enjoyable session for both instructor (also an old girl) and the participants. For me, it brought back memories of how she was taught by her teacher, and how baking instruction hasn't changed much, despite the use of powerpoint slides and a projector to project the recipes and instructions.
For the participants, it really was like being in a Home Econs pratical lesson again, using the same type of utensils and equipment they had 10-15 years ago. Really goes to show that the test of a good baker is in the skills and not the new-fangled tools of today! The baking was so successful the scones that were baked first were almost finished before the end of the session, together with the lovely, cold lemon-ginger tea punch.
The session ended with the usual closure activity – washing up and cleaning the kitchen! Every participant left with a hot and delicious peach and apple crumble for thief family members to savour
