STUDENT DEVELOPMENT SUB-COMMITTEE

Our Mission (purpose of existence)

The Student Development Sub-Committee of the CHIJ Alumni Association was set up to:

(a) Provide a platform for the CHIJ Alumna to connect with, support, befriend and mentor current students of CHIJ Primary and CHIJ Secondary to enrich their personal growth in CHIJ.

(b) Share with and inspire students with the personal experiences of the CHIJ Alumna so that students may learn from such experiences and journey through CHIJ feeling the love of God, achieving their goals with confidence and pride, and developing a desire to contribute to society.

(c) Build an IJ community which enables the CHIJ Alumna to come back to the school to share the various gifts she had received as a student and/or as a result of having received an IJ Education.

Our Vision (our goals)

To partner CHIJ in nurturing CHIJ students to be passionate in what they do, be it studies or other healthy areas of interest, committed to their purpose, compassionate with others and be motivated to reach for their goals both as an individual and as a team.

EFFORTS OF The Student Dev Sub-Committee In Recent Years

PASSION PROGRAMME

The first initiative by the sub-committee was to establish the PASSION PROGRAMME (PP)in 2007.  PP was a program conceptualized for the Normal Stream Secondary 3 students of CHIJ Secondary, our so-called “PASSION GIRLS”. The primary objective of PP was to boost the self-esteem and confidence of  students by providing a platform for them to organize a major event under the guidance of mentors, over a specific time frame, and for the most part, on Saturdays.  These mentors contributed their time and experience to hand-hold, motivate, guide, listen and celebrate the efforts of the students as they plan and bring to fruition each of the PP Events.

THE FOLLOWING ARE INDIVIDUAL PP UNDERTAKEN OVER THE YEARS:

2007 - “CELEBRATE THE IJ GIRL” –a charity high tea and fashion show

About 400 people attended this Event run by the PASSION GIRLS.  The theme of the show was to “Celebrate the IJ girl” and what she stands for -- truth, justice, love.

Net proceeds from the sale of tickets amounting to about S$13,000 benefited the IJ Centre, Clementi, a charitable organization that provides residential and out of school hours care for young children from low income families. The IJ Centre is part of the Infant Jesus Homes and Children’s Centre.

2008 - GLOBAL VILLAGE

This Project required the PASSION GIRLS to work in teams, each team tasked to set up an exhibition booth to showcase a country of their choice.  They had to exhibit and feature interesting aspects of history, culture, sports and food of their chosen country.  The final Global Village Exhibition was held in the CHIJ Sec School Hall. Students from all levels were invited to view and judge the exhibition booths.  Besides having a roaring good time, the PASSION GIRLS and Mentors gained in-depth knowledge of their chosen country.

2009 - ARTS JAM

In 2009, the CHIJ Alumni organized a major event, the ARTS JAM, to showcase the artistic and musical talents of both former and current CHIJ students. Part of the project was delegated to the PASSION GIRLS. They were responsible for managing the food stalls, logistics like traffic control, putting up signages and exhibits, ticket checking and conducting school tours. They also helped to   market the Event to fellow students through a Publicity Team. In all, the Arts Jam was very successful in attracting many former students who set foot on our Toa Payoh Campus for the first time.

2010 - “AMAZING RACE” 2010 & VIDEO PRODUCTION PROJECT

In 2010, we invited former graduates of the PP to kickstart the program by helping to organize a day event which was based on the “AMAZING RACE” concept for their juniors.  The project for the year was a video production in which the PASSION GIRLS were taught the skills of video production by an experienced producer and asked to produce a short video clip on a theme of their choice. A day outing at East Coast was also arranged for them at the end of the project for their hard work and an opportunity for them to hang out with their mentors outside of school.

MOVING FORWARD

The Student Development Sub-Com has plans to move its initiatives beyond the Passion Girls, to involve CHIJ students of various levels. These are still “work in progress”, and when ready will be announced to all Members.
